Binance says a hack affected about $6.3 billion, more than four times the Bybit theft.

That would be the largest crypto theft on record, the blockchain firm TRM Labs said on Oct. 29.

Binance’s estimate, to scale

$6.3 billion

Binance’s own estimate, reported Oct. 29, 2026. The first 150 squares equal Bybit’s $1.5 billion.

Binance said it had worked with partners to freeze roughly $3 billion of the affected assets. Frozen means locked so the attackers can’t move it, not returned.

Two blockchain firms, TRM Labs and Chainalysis, linked the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group, NPR reported on Oct. 30. The FBI blamed the same group for the Bybit theft. Binance said it would cover all losses.

How to read this

The $6.3 billion is Binance’s own estimate of what the hack affected, reported on Oct. 29. NPR noted that Binance had not confirmed how much was stolen; the BBC reported the full amount as stolen. We use Binance’s word, “affected,” and say “about” because it is an estimate. TRM Labs counted about $6.36 billion moved out of Binance wallets across 10 blockchains. The $3 billion frozen is a rounded figure. Figures as of Oct. 30, 2026.
